Find the Good – and Praise It

This phrase was found at the bottom of Alex Haley’s pale yellow personal stationery. It described Alex’s personal code of conduct, what might be called his operating philosophy. It predated his connection to Journal, the small startup in which he had become an investor in 1988, along with his photographer friend and fellow Pulitzer Prize-winner Robin Hood.
Sometime early in Journal’s history, the company adopted Alex’s personal credo as its own. Like Alex, the words were simple, direct and abundantly positive. The phrase perfectly fit the company’s growing business of telling stories with distinctive photography and compelling editorial content.

Alex would be amazed at the company’s progress and the tools at its disposal to tell the stories of communities and specific industries in print, digital, social, video and mobile.

He would be amazed that the company has transformed from a single-focused custom publisher to a media company anchored by three distinct brands: Livability, Farm Flavor and Business Climate.

But he would be most amazed that the enduring element that describes the company’s mission is his simple, powerful phrase: “Find the Good – and Praise It!”
